WHITEBOARD WORK

During one year 7 lesson I worked on the white board, creating large Mars1 type shapes. I was asked to work slowly and steadily throughout the lesson so that the pupils could see both, the way in which Mars1 worked and what type of drawing he achieved. Occasionally others (Y13s and teachers) came over to add to my drawing, similar to how Mars1 works in a festival tent or large public event - Mars 1 has others work with him, for him and for themselves.

Just using my imagination I wanted to challenge my knowledge of shape and movement and of Mars1. Using things I have learnt already I had 40 minutes to see what I can produce in this time using one whiteboard pen!. Looking back, I needed to try and create deep perspective or shapes with movement and tried freehand to create optical illusion. I think that as a large sketch the perspective came from overlapping forms to sit some behind others, shading and shadows in the cross hatching.

MARS 1 and ME

It was important that I didn't just relate to Mars1, especially because he did not reply to my email. I studied works by others, as well as Bridget Riley and Fiona Rae. I enjoyed looking at online sites such as www.thisiscolossal.com  who explore modern, latest, weird works including strange pieces. In addition, www.streetartutopia.com and www.illustrationweb.com all provided inspiration too.

MY FINAL PIECE DEVELOPING

MY MAIN PIECE

Firstly I created a background by using black poster paint, a mix of acrylic and emulsion. I mixed black and a little bit of white to create a dark grey because I wanted drips and brush marks similar to Mars1. I then knew it was important I got a massive brush and dipped it into red and gold and swept this across the surface to show movement and almost air similar to a galaxy which gives my background an interesting surface.

MARS 1 DEVELOPING

I created shapes using the brush, I created massive swirls. These were going to contain smaller elements such as the isometric snakes and optical illusions. Things were looking messy and I wanted to control some focal points and create neat detailed areas.

Things were looking top heavy I needed to draw the eye to the bottom and created the DNA shape.  The circle perspective allows for some curvilinear shape. I didn't have any. It is not quite centre but it is in the foreground and will probably remain there. It overlaps everything else. The vase in the top left is static like a Fiona Rae shape and pouring from it is a stream, through the spheres and around.

SPRAY CAN

There is a softness about Mars 1 which I was lacking, every different part on my piece was strong to look at and lacked a blending in technique. Using spray paints I was able to soften areas I thought were too sharp to look at. I used colours such as white, grey and black. I made sure the spray can when using was away from the piece to ensure it didn't actually cover any of the detail I have added. Using the spray cans gave another level to the piece which made the stand out designs I made come behind to try and balance the piece.

MY FINAL PIECE PLANNING

FRAMING

Simply cutting up images allows me to see what kind of frame I might use. I like the idea that Mars 1 plays with surreal shapes in a landscape and am considering landscape myself.  I don’t really think that a column would allow my brush to flow across like you read a landscape and a square frame is in my opinion definitely fixed or Static. I want my final piece to have an energy.
